Other's have pegged 2012 as the end for various reasons. The US economy continues to decline. War rages in the Middle East Anti-biotic diseases continue to appear, and new diseased are brought in across porous national borders The governments continue to crack down amongst increasing unrest Food prices soar as inflation reaches epic proportions. Allegations of voting fraud in the US increase. By 2010, the results of election in the US are reported by often disbelieved An isolated president attempts to address a 20% unemployment rate with a massive influx of government spending. by 2011, major bank failures are a daily occurance. Unemployment reaches 40%. Food riots occur in several large US cities. Marshal law is declared In early 2012, the first terrorist nuclear device is detonated in Tel Aviv. Israel responds by dropping nuclear weapons on Mecca and Medina. The entire middle east explodes into war. Oil prices reach $20 per gallon Food prices triple as fertilizer and pesticide prices skyrocket Famine becomes an issue in the United States. Mass famines in the third world are starving billions. India and China have several border clashes. In Africa, a new, highly contagious form of viral hemorrhagic fever appears. It begins spreading rapidly across Africa and Asia. The November presidential elections are to even to call, and there is widespread evidence of vote count fraud. Several states threaten succession, and the country is split in support of two presidents. The Red Plague gains ground in South America and the first 'official' cases appear in the US in december. Pharmaceutical companies are nationalized and the CDC begin to work feverishly to develop a cure or vaccine for the black death of the 21st century. Volunteers are required. Some are prisoners or those held on various charges of sedition and other crimes new to the current Regime. Others are enticed by offers of gold 'new dollars' and other rewards. The money offered to these human guineas pigs is enough to start over, to have a home and buy the increasingly scare and expensive food. Welcome guinea pigs.... From eod at travellercentral.com Wed Mar 12 14:30:35 2008 From: eod at travellercentral.com (End of Days Mailing list) Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2008 14:30:35 -0600 Subject: [EOD] EOD Chargen Message-ID: Here are the first details of EOD characters. More to follow: The basic character: The End of Days character is described by physical and mental stats, and various skills and skill levels they posses. The basic game engine is derived from Classic Traveller and should look familiar. Stats range from 1-15, with 7 representing the mythical average man. Stats effect total hit points and have an indirect impact on some skills. Where appropriate, and when there is not specific skill, stats may determine a character's ability to do something, resist something, etc. As in Traveller, the basic success roll on 2d6 is 8+. In the event a stat roll is made, the stat DM is derived as STAT - 7 = DM. Fo example, if the character was forced to make a roll against strength, and possessed a strength of 7, the basic roll to succeed would be 8+ (DM of 0) and ignoring any other DMs. If the same character had a strength of 10, he would have a stat DM of +2, and thus would require a roll of 6+ on 2d6 for the same success roll of 8+ The basic EOD character has 5 stats: Strength (STR), Dexterity (DEX), Heath (HTH), Intelligence (INT) and Education (EDU). A description of the stats follows, as well as any in game effects: STR Strength represents raw physical power. It determine how much a character can life or carry, how much damage can be done with melee weapons and is a factor in total hit points. High levels of strength result in bonus damage with melee weapons, while lower strength results in reduced damage. STR Damage modifier 1-2 -3 3-4 -2 5-6 -1 7-10 0 11+ 1 point per Strength also effect the characters ability to use some melee weapons, and to tolerate recoil from firearms. DEX Dexterity represents balance and hand eye coordination and related adeptness. Dexterity can also improve the basic ability with some missile weapons. Dexterity is a factor in hit points. Characters with high dexterity may be ambidextrous. Characters with low dexterity are clumbsy and may have to make additional rols for tasks requiring coordination. DEX Offhand dex penalty 1-4 -5 5-8 -4 9-11 -3 12-13 -2 14 -1 15 0 HTH Health represents physical fitness, endurance, resistance to disease and general physical well being. Certain forms of attack are directly aimed at health: e.g. Infections, radiation and poisons. Health is also a component of total hit points, and effect healing rate and resistance to shock HTH Healing rate 1-5 0.5 pts per day 6-10 1 pt per day 11-14 2 pts per day 15 3 pts per day INT Intelligence represents basic problem solving, natural cunning and the ability to figure things out. EDU Education represents knowledge or 'book learning'. A successful EDU roll indicated that the character has actual knowledge pertaining to the situation. Derived stats: These include hit points, carrying capacity etc, that are based on the 5 primary stats: Hit point = STR+DEX+HTH Carrying capacity A character can carry up to 5x his STR in pounds without being encumbered, 10x his STR in pounds and be encumbered. A character my carry 20x his STR and is heavily encumbered and may do nothing else. These are the skills that will be available to your characters, so make sure you ask any questions or provide any comments ASAP. Character who go without food and/or water will suffer deleterious effects. For each day a character goes with food, he must lower one of his stat points by one. For each day a character goes without water, he must lower each of his stats one one. Consider the mythical average man: STR 7, DEX, 7, HTH 7 He can go 21 days without food, but only 7 days without water The RL survival rule of thumb is "3 days without water, 3 weeks without food." Note that the effects are immediate. If a character has lost points from lack of water, their stat saving roles are adjusted to reflect the current level. When a character's stats reach 0, the character is assumed to have died from starvation or dehydration. Recovering: Recovering from lack of water is fairly quick once a supply has been obtained. The average character will make a near full recovery in one to 2 days. It takes longer to recover from lack of food. The general rule is that a character recovers at a rate of 3 points per day. Alternate recovery rate: The GM has several options with regard to recovery from lack of food and water: 1. The GM may rule by fiat, and declare that recover takes x number of days 2. The GM may allow recovery at 2X the character's normal healing rate More alternate rules: Profound starvation. At the GMs discretion, he may allow for profound starvation. In this case the GM allows for the character to live beyond zero in their stats, but less than their stat in negative values. Upon recovery they will take permanent reduction in any stat that dropped below zero by the number exceeding zero. For example, the mythical average man (STR 7, DEX 7 HTH 7) drops to STR 0 DEX 0 HTH -2 before obtaining food, Upon recovery, his normal stats are now 775 due to the permanent effects of profound starvation. The only way that the character may recover to his original level is by using experience point to buy additional stat points. Profound dyhydration: Also known as death. (continued) From eod at travellercentral.com Thu Mar 13 07:30:34 2008 From: eod at travellercentral.com (End of Days Mailing list) Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2008 07:30:34 -0600 Subject: [EOD] Skills - Continued Message-ID: <1EDCD913-877E-403E-850C-808E05D30CE9@travellercentral.com> Alternate rule: The GM may require that the total number of skills a character may know may not exceed the character's INT + EDU. Zero level skills are not included in the total skills count. Thus a the mythical average man with stats 77777 may have 14 different skills at level one or higher. The GM may wish to exercise this option if player create highly skilled characters with very low INT and/or EDU. From eod at travellercentral.com Thu Mar 13 07:48:06 2008 From: eod at travellercentral.com (End of Days Mailing list) Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2008 07:48:06 -0600 Subject: [EOD] Skills - Hobby Skills Message-ID: <6CE393D8-E6EC-4E86-9C25-F088E25FB695@travellercentral.com> The GM may elect to allow the characters a number of hobby skills without cost. Hobby skills are skills that don't necessarily have direct impact on game mechanics, but add character and may be occasionally useful. Hobby skills are often 'watered down' versions of normal game skills. For example, the skill farming represents a valuable in game skill. It allows a character to effect output of food on a land plot, determine best crops and generally maximize food production. It's hobby analog is gardening. The character is adept at growing things in small plots with the right conditions and adjuncts. A hobbyist gardener would be able to grow a few vegetables, but they would not be equipped to run a large farm providing food for a settlement. The hobby skill cooking would allow the character to turn out a decent meal with the right ingredients. The skill cook represents the ability to menu plan, understand nutrition and maximize food value from on hand ingredients. The GM may allow one, two or more hobby skills at no cost. In general, a character can have two hobby skills, or buy a single hobby skill twice, indicating a high level of skill. There is no definitive hobby skill list. Players may choose from regular skills, excluding combat skills and any other skills the GM determines do not have a hobby version. The players may also choose any other skills not listed but approved by the GM. Some possible hobby skills: Cooking Gardening Musical Instrument Handicrafts Magic Sports etc From eod at travellercentral.com Thu Mar 13 22:38:39 2008 From: eod at travellercentral.com (End of Days Mailing list) Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2008 22:38:39 -0600 Subject: [EOD] Skills list Message-ID: <1EFFC466-1934-42A0-BAA6-965E38EC1CDF@travellercentral.com> Here is a first pass on skills.
