Tibet is not all snow and mountains. Some of it is desert. All of
it is close to India and China, and trade across Central Asia passes
through or near it. So China, at least, has coveted Tibet for
hundreds of years, and has exercised direct or indirect control over
it, off and on, for that period.
It is possible that China seized Tibet in the last century in part
because the mountains provided defensible locations for nuclear
missile bases.
