Here's a point against large ships:

Look at the cube/square issue we were discussing about thrust.  Same issue
with weapons.  Pick a ship configuration and design a warship at 1000 dTon.
Now scale it up and design at 8000 dTon (twice as long, wide, and deep).
You have 8 times as much ship, but only 4 times as much surface to mount
weapons on.

On a separate note, Why are meson guns mounted on the outside, taking up
space for other weapons.  If planets can "deep" mount them, so can a ship!
