Never used any form of VoIP? ;^)

If you want realism and expensive communication, you'll probably want
to make real-time video communication practically impossible.  Voice
should be prohibitive to all but the richest.  That enables text
communication to be merely expensive - 1000 written words typically
requires fewer bits than 2 seconds of voice-optimised compressed
audio.
