Well, in theory you can transmit ascii in 7-bit instead of 8-bit. Due to
the limitations of SMTP, when sending email ascii data is significantly
(25%) cheaper than data with any amount of unicode, though this is a
specific technical issue which there's no reason to assume for any other
protocol.
