Pop died on 16 February 2000, at age 78. He served 32
years in the US Merchant Marine, including the Atlantic War
(1940) and entire Pacific Campaign. His ship was strafed
by the RAF while coming up the Thames (a long story,
frequently told), and he was in or near action for much of
the war. He was mad at the Germans and Japanese for making
him the old man of the deck crew at the age of 21, when he
felt that he was still in his apprenticeship -- but the
senior guys had all taken Petty Officer positions in the
Navy.
