The players ship misjumps. It winds up at this world. From a warning
bouy or something they learn that approaching closer than XX to the
planet will subject them to the effects.
Alas, they have damage to the ship such that they were able to
establish a safe orbit but can't leave.
There are weird things at one point (Nantucket, according to the
chapters of the 4th book that are online). Maybe something makes them
think that they can get help there.
In any case, they have to abandon the ship in personal re-entry packs
(the only tech I can think of that'd get them down intact under the
circumstances).
They won't come down anywhere near the anomaly. So they'll get to
work their way across the world to get there and hope they can get
help.
Alternatively, the Alien Space Bats left the starport alone. The
effects only exist outside the extrality line. Which makes for a
really different setup.
