There was an alien race from Traveller: 2300 (no connection to Classic
Traveller) that specialized in biotech.  In the game background, a few
of their developments were beginning to find human markets.  IIRC, one
of these was a toxic filter system for vehicles (it could have been
made for humans, too, but that was too freaky to market) and another
was a little animal to which you could feed newly-discovered nuts and
berries to see if they were edible.  I recall specifically that the
second item had been made "cute and cuddly" to boost sales.
