I've never had that be a problem.  I often use the street plans and
general descriptions from travel books in my games.  I ran the
Twilight:2000 New York City module using a Michelin guide.  I had no
problem with the PCs knowing what *used* to be where.  And I used the
street plan of Washington, D.C. for the deliberately-isolated
"foreigner's enclave" on Pavabid.  The players tumbled to the layout
about halfway through the adventure, but it had no discernable effect
on play.
