Oh, but they can be incredibly important.  In 2300AD, the American arm
appeared to be a dead end.  But a few dim red or brown dwarfs in the right
place would open it back up again.  Likewise, in Traveller, they take on
wonderful refueling point roles, making "Jump-1 mains" irrelevant.  But as
you show in the 3D map stuff, you know that.

2d maps have been preferred because they are simple to use/read.  The only
RPGs I can think of with 3D maps were 2300AD, Universe, and another really
obscure one I can't think of the name of (Distant Suns?  Space Opera?).  And
we all know what the status of those games is.  :(
