Depends on what you mean by average distance. On average, in our part of 
the milky way, there is one stellar system per 12 cubic parsecs (there 
are 100 stars within 6.62 parsecs, or a volume of 1,200 cubic parsecs). 
I don't remember exactly how to compute the likely average distance to 
the nearest star, but it should be in the range of 1.2 to 1.3 parsecs.
