Once upon a time, I spent a *lot* of time tinkering with star 
system generation. There are some pretty good programs 
floating around that do a more reasonable job than using 
Bode's Law...probably, since we don't really know for 
sure...if you want to go looking for them.

I remember I included a "Gaia" component to the system when it 
came to whether a world could/would support life or not. 
Basically, if it even barely could then the program would 
determine if life existed there (either naturally or 
accidentally or purposefully imported), and if it did the life 
itself would act as a moderator that influenced temperature, 
atmosphere and hydrology. I have no idea whether that would 
happen, but it did give a lot more systems with life bearing 
worlds and that was more interesting than dozens and dozens of 
barren systems.
