Sounds like it was based (vaguely) on the BBC TV Series Survivors,  
which had been on in the mid-70's (and was totally unrelated to the  
current crop of reality shows!) I've seen DVDs in HMV. Caroline  
Seymour starred.

Premise: There was a virus released which killed of about 99% of the  
human race. Can a totally unrelated group of survivors with no/little/ 
some skills survive?

Survived two seasons and wasn't renewed.
