I'm of the opinion that even if the Russians had the same rail gauge and
the Germans had locomotives suited to harsh winter conditions the end
result would have been the same. Probably more Russian dead and more
parts of Russia destroyed but Germany could never conquer much less
garrison the country. There were massive partisan bands running amuck
behind so every step east the Germans made would mean they'd need more
forces in the rear to conduct security.
