I don't think it's about "status" as such.  I think it's more "we can't
allow the possibility of somebody like this becoming Emperor."  After all,
if being the Emperor's heir means anything, it means that (if he survives)
he WILL be the next Emperor.  Otherwise you get into all sorts of messy
factional succession issues.
