Given that most PC's often end up on worlds that make Iraq look safe, 
carrying longarms and even squad support weapons, is just self defence. 
In other worlds just carrying a knife will mark you as "looking for 
trouble". Personally if you actually expect someone to attack you, then 
you should be loaded for bear, a pistol is for preventing minor crime.
