IMTU, all the usual CT weapons exist, but slug throwers are the common
sidearm and in the scout corp, the long arm. In space, we depend on
recoilless weapons, such as lasers or recoilless rifles. Plasma weapons are
more commonly vehicle mounted, having some practicality issues with man
portable versions. gun safety is a safety toggle and often a grip safety,
witha few weapons designed for pocket duty omitting the safety toggle, ,and
instead depending on a grip safety and an elevated trigger pull resistance-
20 pounds or thereabout, instead of the more common 2-4 pounds.
While local worlds vary wildly, the IMPERIAL perception about guns is they
are a useful and potentially dangerous tool worthy of respect and demanding
of basic competence, and anyone onactive duty should be expected to have
something on their person if they are dressed. nobles and office sorts
usually do not show one, and in rear areas might actually be unarmed. Navy
personnel often do not carry a weapon IN a ship, unless boarding is
imminent, and army grunts either are unarmed or have a rifle. Army officers
wear a pistol as a part of the uniform. Scouts are armed, unless they are
sleeping or bathing. anti gun nuts arepolitely humored and ignored. If they
really get annoying, they get a polite and firm explanation why Imperial
authority maintains the policy that personnel have a DUTY to defend
themselves. Army folk actively doing something carry whatever the mission
requires if they can lift it,and mount the heavier stuff on something to
carry it, and anyone objecting is invited to take it away from them. The
marinies are somewhat less diplomatic about it, but the same policy prevails.
Supersonic vs subsonic loads are an on going topic. a supersonic bullet
makes m ore tissue damage due to the wide wound channel inflicted by the
shock wave of the passage of the round through soft tissue. However, SS
rounds lose kinetic energy morerapidly dueto that atmospheric shock wave.
Subsonic rounds tend to be larger, drop velocity slower, and deliver more
energy via mass rather than extreme velocity.
A recent arrival is the TL15 BB gun, which tosses a tiny bit of metal
downrange at relativistic velocities. QUITE visible due to the fireball
surrounding the load, the impact is startlingly impressive, like unto
dynamite. Range in atmosphere is limited as the round evaporates, but it
makes a dandy attitude readjustment tool. It also works well as a ship
mounted antimissile weapon in space, with remarkable range.
Gunsmiths have a steady and bright career on tthe frontier areas, and don't
do all that bad in the interior, although demand there is considerably less.
As for preferably getting hit with a pistol round, a common .45 will do
considerable and lasting work to impress SURVIVORS with what it can do to
you. The opinions of the remainder of the target pool (most of them) were
not available at the time of writing.
