Yeah, first thing that came to my mind concerning WWI trench 
warfare was fuel-air bombs dropped from Airships (Zeppelins).

A squadron of Zeppelins flying high over London, Manchester, 
Scappa Flow, Paris...suddenly the sky catches fire in a score 
of places each hundreds of cubic meters in volumn and entire 
cities/naval bases burn...and all the people therein...shudder!
