Much of Traveller combat (and other games as well) takes place indoors.
There, a handgun is more useful, and the lower accuracy is not mush of on
issue.

Plus, you don't want to be shot huge holes in the ship's computer/control
panels.  :)  Ad like Leon said, hidden and/or less attention-getting.

[and yes, I served in Army after being a Navy brat for 16 years.]

At worst it loses energy faster...  until it's down to the same speed, then
progresses the same.  Meanwhile, it went a long ways.
