Neither the rules nor reality particularly agrees with that. Go for an 
automatic carbine or SMG.

Traditional traveller bulkheads will bounce assault rifle rounds, and if 
you look at operations on real-world ships, it's amazing the degree to 
which potential damage to the ship is less worrisome than being killed 
because of an inadequate weapon.

It gets worse if armor is involved. My favorite is pondering battlesuit 
operations on a merchant ship in GT. A Redding has 4-8 times as much 
armor (depending on attack type) as the hull of a typical merchant 
starship, so any weapon capable of hurting a battlesuit will rip giant 
holes in the ship.
