Nobody said the "tiny bit of metal" has to remain solid :)

In atmosphere it wouldn't stay solid anyway.  It would become a dense
bolt of plasma (still travelling at insane speed).

.. probably quite a lot larger than the original poster was referring
to as a "tiny bit".  Maybe a few milligrams?
