I can tell you in real life I would much rather be armed with a shotgun 
than a 9mm if I'm trying to clear ship passageways. Most of the 
bulkheads are quite capable of resisting shot and throwing a couple of 
rounds down a passageway is sure to clear it. With a pistol you actually 
have to stick your head out to aim, and probably get shot.
Back when that was part of my job I always carried a shotgun, even 
though as team leader I was suppose to have a .45, or later a 9mm.
