What MOS/Branch? I was an Infantry officer after being 11B.  I's pick  
a rifle indoors too.  Keep in mind that an M4 carbine has more energy  
at 400 yards than a 44 magnum does at the muzzle.  You can miss  
indoors, and a 9mm pistol will actually out penetrate a 5.56x45mm  
rifle with frangible ammunition.  The only reason to use a pistol is  
if the space is really, really confining.  In such a case, offensive  
type grenades are probably indicated.
