Size mainly.  Look how thick a round is.  Now multiply that by, say, 10
stacked in a mag, plus about 2 more for the spring assembly under them.
That's a big mag.

[By the way, from wiki:  Clip (ammunition), holds rounds together with a
single piece of metal (commonly confused with a magazine).]
