Personally, I like what Elizabeth Moon did. Three very good books with the
same main character. Other characters come & go, with some cameos but not
obsessive. Then the 4th book follows the main character, *and* a new
character. In fact, a space battle and surrounding events are told twice,
from their very different perspectives. Then 3 more books follow the new
character, with the old one making a few cameos. One of the best
transitions I've ever read.
And altho the books form a sequence, each is a good read on it's own. I
came into the middle of the series and backtracked when I found out about
the older stuff. :)
Her characters have human flaws, weaknesses, and problems. They aren't
superheroes.
As for the politics, I prefer when the author uses the story to *explore*
politics, cultural, or technological ideas, rather than to explicate his own
preferences and beliefs.

Yeah, but almost all that space in Texas is useful cattle range. Most of
the Australian Outback is basically a big infertile desert. (it says so on
the same wiki page with the size :P )
Mind you, I'd still consider moving there if the American political scene
doesn't improve, altho their PM seems to be in King George's pocket.
