There seems to be some sort of (magnetic?) energy field involved. At
least, that's what I get from the comment in the Bowman Belt
adventure, where it's explaining why the sheilding on Bifrost Station
failed and killed most everyone aboard.
In my old TU, I had some rad shielding with doses of anti-rad (from
Ultratech) in the ships emergency med kits. Even so, nobody liked
refueling from gas giants, unless there was no other possible option.
In my new TU, fuel usage is a lot lower since you don't need hydrogen
to use the stargates; you only need enough to fuel your fusion ram
jets there and back.
