I happen to like the concept of ejection pods - largely because
they're a handy excuse to let Mr. Plot Device survive until his
scheduled death.

This one is fairly simple, actually.  Your supplies form a single
detachable module, secured into the vehicle with lockable handles.
Energize the built-in grav unit, snap open the handles and yank it
(them) out.  When you get back, reverse this process.  It'll take a
few seconds, max.

Of course, this does given the possibility that some *really* lazy
crewmember might not put it back upon return, since "we're going to be
making the same trip in just another couple of hours, you know."
