All known superconductors have a critical temp (temp above which the 
quit superconducting), critical current (current above which they 
quit superconducting) and a critical field density (magnetic field 
strength aboive which they quit superconducting).

So if you get a mag field pulse that exceeds the critical density, 
the affected bit of cable becomes a "normal" conductor. And that 
instantly starts runaway heating (as most superconductors are realy 
*lousy* coonductors when they aren't superconducting).
