Radiation suickness isn't caused by a contaminant. It's caused by 
physical *damage* to molecule struck by high energy particles.

This breaks of bits of the molecule or changes the comfiguration.

Main source problems (other than DNA damage causing leasting problems 
in a cell) is the fact that the free radicals generated will 
chemcally combine with other things to louse up the workings of the 
cells.

There's not a lot you can do about this sort of thing short of 
"magic" tech.
