When I draw up deckplans (or re-draw them . . . I don't find many
pre-made ones that are entirely to my liking), there are always odd
bits left over, little nooks and crannies between compartments or
along the edges of the streamlined hull shape.  So that's where I
figure these bits go.  Also, most of my engineering spaces are crammed
with pipes and such, especially if it's a modified ship.  Even in
places which the deckplan shows as "open deck space."  You see,
something that always sticks in my mind is a line from "Han Solo At
Star's End," where the illicit shipyard owner's daughter says to Han
(paraphrased): "In exchange for your help in finding my father, I'll
fix your drive problem.  I'll even throw in some reworking of your
piping and conduits, to take out the worst of the headknockers you've
got all over the place in here."
