Okaaay.  So I guess you don't consider Star Trek or Star Wars to be 
science fiction?  Neither is noted for their hard science.

Type his name into IMDB and you might be surprised. According to
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0923736/awards
he was nominated for an Oscar for the screenplay of Toy Story, among 
other awards.

He wrote "Alien:Resurrection" and recently directed a couple of episodes 
of "The Office".  He keeps himself busy.

You may not "get" Firefly/Serenity, but I consider it to be very good 
science fiction and to capture the essence of Traveller.
