Actually, the snatches of Chinese were about the worst part, to me.  I don't
mind them using it.  But they didn't subtitle it, or give any other cue to
what it meant.  Like in the pilot show, where they're heading out to see
Badger.  Wash says to Zoe something in Chinese that means "be careful" or
"watch tour back".  And she says in English "I will".  If I hadn't already
had a page up with the translation (linked from the wiki page) I really
wouldn't have know what he said.  He could have said "bring back some kiwi"
for all I knew.  Several times, I had to pause the show to go find out what
had been said.  Either pausing or being left clueless interrupts the flow.

On the plus side, I hadn't seen Ron Glass (Book) in anything since his
Barney Miller days.  And Kaylee's real cute.  :D
