Roberto Chang was born on crowded, smelly world were people rarely left
their assigned apartments. They communicated with the outside world by
way of full wall screens. Those screens also showed a young Roberto
that there were other worlds. Ones that didn't smell so bad all the
time. He wanted to see those worlds. So as soon as he turned 18, he
enlisted in the Imperial Navy. He did well enough on his entrance exams
to get a technical position in the Navy. He thought this was pretty
cool until the ship he was on took part in some major battles. That is
when he learned that the engineering decks in a space craft are filled
with things that explode in battle. He decided then to start taking his
career on a different track. He studied hard and got into OCS. After
graduating near the top of his class, he continued to work hard and
managed a promotion fairly quickly. The competition was fierce, and
Roberto used a few tricks he learned in the streets back home. The
result was he managed to snatch a plum diplomatic assignment away from
another young fast tracker. Ensign Weligama's career track was derailed
in the competition. She was shunted off to the Naval Office of
Personnel, where promotions were extremely rare. Unknown to Chang, she
vowed revenge! The fact that he was also knighted as the result of the
highly successful diplomatic mission was just the thing to keep her
looking for her chance to take Roberto Chang down a peg or two.

Over the next twelve years, Roberto Chang was a model staff officer. He
got in just enough time aboard ships of the line to keep his career
moving along smartly. He worked his way into choice assignments, even a
few command slots, by working the base O Club and knowing whom to loose
to in the Naval fencing tournaments. That he was actually a good
commander and decent tactician didn't hurt either.

Despite his best efforts, he did see combat on occasion. Since
defeating the enemy was the best way to keep things from blowing up too
much in your own ship, Chang was highly motivated to win. One of those
engagements was what earned him his promotion to Captain and a further
step up in the Nobility.

Robert Chang was supposed to have been on the short list for fast track
to Admiral. Instead, his records were somehow “lost” in the system.
Instead of moving on to advance command college training, Roberto Chang
found himself being processed out of the Navy through a quiet
administrative back door usually used to remove trouble makers and
political undesirables from Imperial service.

He many not have remembered Rory Weligama, but she remembered him after
all those years...

Now Roberto Chang is a civilian and looking for a job. The Cr160,000 he
has stored away won't support he life style he wants for as long as he
would like.
