Class/level turns me off as well.  I do like point-build, though.  I'm
not a fanatic about "balancing" characters, but I think a point-build
system takes a lot of the pressure off.  It's rather hard for a player
to get jealous of another player's PC when he could have used the same
points to get the same benefits (if he had decided to go that way
rather than the way he actually went).
