I liked my low-level fighters to carry lots of daggers. This was
particularly true with my usual GM, who was a real stickler for game
reality. We couldn't go around with strung bows or crossbows for very
long, as the bowstrings would start to stretch (particularly in damp
conditions like your typical dungeon). So if we got jumped, daggers
were a good option. I could throw them at approaching enemies before
combat closed in, shaving off a few hit points.
So when they became next to useless at higher levels, it kinda bummed
me out. But my PCs still kept them around. Once - when we were (I
think) seventh level - this proved a lifesaver. All our magic got
depleted and his old +1 dagger turned out to be the only thing left
that could hurt the Big Bad Thing. Of course, he nearly *died*
killing it that way. But it made for a great in-game story!
