Lemme think. A 1 km object, sunlit at 1 AU, has an apparent magnitude of
16-19 depending on its albedo. Starlight is about a billion times dimmer
than direct sunlight, so a 1 km deep space object, at 1 AU, would have
an apparent magnitude of 39-42. That seems fairly impractical even with
futuristic sensors.
