A lot of Lester del Rey and Arthur C Clarke stuff from the 1960s and 
earlier would work just fine for getting the right flavor. 

There are plenty of other authors, but those were the ones who came 
to mind.

Del Rey's stuff starting with "Step to the Stars" is a nice "history 
that never was" setting.
