Actually now you're skirting dangerously close to crossing two of my 
ideas for potential campaigns together...  In fact this is my primary 
idea for a 1950's campaign, though at least initially it would be 
limited to the solar system.  My one 1930's campaign is largely plane 
oriented, with sci-fi tech (think "Crash Ryan", or "Sky Captain").

For 1930's SF as background, I'd be inclined to base it on the 
original Buck Rogers comic strips.
