UK/EU electrical power is 230 volts (and 50 hertz, IIRC). Safety
standards require new plugs to be equipped with a fuse.
US/Canadian power is 120 volts @ 60 hertz, somewhat less likely to
electrocute a user if things go badly. Most North American market
electrical goods do not come with a fused plug. (Some hair dryers
come with a Ground Fault Interrupt circuit breaker on the plug,
similar but not the same as a fuse.)

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have
to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.
