Oh, I know the icosahedron is useful for game mapping (although the corners
cause some difficulties). It's just fixing the hex size to 1,000 km that I
have a problem with. Then your maps have a 5,000 km increment in
circumference. So if your world is 42,500 km around, you have to adjust to
either 40,000 or 45,000. Why not just change the hex size?
Hell, for *really* small worlds, you could wrap 4 hexes around an
octahedron! :) Then you'd have 4 *really* nasty corners, but everything
else would be nicely flat.
