Shortening the barrel reduces muzzle velocity. No barrel, means a lot
of the energy is lost, rather than be being focused toward moving the
bullet.

The Mythbusters TV show "cooked" cartridges in an oven.  When the
powder ignited, the brass case caused more damage to the inside of the
oven than the bullet.  It was moving faster.
