This is only applicable to small arms,  Artillery employs some of the  
same terms but they have different meanings.

'Cartridge 'generally refers to the complete unit: bullet, powder,  
case and primer - also sometimes called a 'round' of ammunition.  A  
shotgun has a shell, a rifle or pistol has a case (unless it's  
caseless).  FWIW, an empty shotgun shell is correctly called a  
'hull'.  A shotgun shell is composed of a hull, powder, primer, shot  
and typically a 'wad', but sometimes a cup or filler.

Really, only gun bunnies like us care.
