But real fulminate of mercury is a grayish powder.  There's no way to
make it look like a clear crystal?  Bummer.

You know, it occurs to me that Teacher was probably not really
expecting to have to say anything at all.  His briefing from Old
Cellmate would have probably told him that New Distributor didn't keep
his office safe closed while they were there before and that he
crushed the previous sample with the pommel of the knife.  So Teacher
was probably just waiting for him to do that, then while everyone else
was stunned by the flashbang, he would snatch the money from the open
safe himself.  The "I'll blow us all up" maneuver must have been his
"inspired" back-up plan.
