GT proposed an answer to this: the Authenticist Movement. As a
conscious reaction to the blandness of Imperial over-culture, various
populations have chosen to "rediscover" their ethnic/cultural roots.
Of course, the Vilani never really lost theirs (at least to hear them
tell it). But for the rest of humaniti, it's a case of picking
*which* roots you want to rediscover. And - of course - the
"authentic" society which enthusiasts create in the late 57th century
may bear only a passing resemblance to what we are familiar with, here
in the early 21st century.
(Actually, IIRC, the AM was created to provide an in-game explanation
for why so many canon background details and cultural references mimic
our real world . . .)
Of course, IMTU, it's only the mid 29th century, since I've radically
telescoped the canon timeline. But there's still plenty of room for
error, since my Long Night was a lot darker than the canon one and
only ended a little over two centuries back . . . for the Core Worlds,
anyway. Out on the fringes, there remain systems that have yet to be
recontacted by the rest of the 'Verse.
