Merchants probably aren't worried about minimal surface area; they're
likely to be fairly spread out to maximize access area (thus minimizing
loading/unloading time). Warships are, because surface area = area that
must be armored. As for heat, if you're producing enough heat that you
actually need more surface area, you're usually better off buildings two
smaller ships.
