To me mass produced means making something that is "acceptable" and
cheap (as in inexpensive) and obliviously massive amounts of them. You
push the limits to beat the rest of the competition.

Handmade means that each piece is looked at and made as well as it can
be made by that person or group, the makers care about the piece and
their reputation hangs in the balance. They tend to be one of a kind
things and often artistic or novel. The tools used don't matter that
much. I think reacting to the materials in part of it too. Handmade
will take that knot in a board and use it in the design. Mass produced
will not even know the knot was there.

I might not be fitting what a dictionary says but that is how I think about it.
