My great grandmothers engagement ring was a pearl and as I understand
it diamonds being "the stone" is new and because of ads. In japan they
often use opals. What counts is the idea. As has been pointed out,
fake diamonds can only be caught by experts now, thus again it is the
idea because your wife and her friends will never know and if you were
lied to you would not ether. This is not about reality but about
perception. Also note that diamonds don't have much resale value. What
does that tell you? They are not considered a commodity ether.
