In my experience it is mostly the age. I had only boys in the rpg
group until I was about 19, and the teen-age play was... teen-age,
not that sophisticated at the start but not all combat and minmaxing.
I think the primary reason for not having girls in the group was that
nobody *thought* to *ask*. Which was kind of stupid of us, but, hey,
we were somewhat socially outcast nerds.
As an adult, I think I haven't played in many groups which weren't co-ed.
There has been no difference between men and women playing, as groups.
My former housemate (a woman) has run several campaigns with just women
playing and they have been just like all other campaigns. Mostly I think
my friends want a non-fighting game if they play rpgs - board or computer
games are for the times when you want to hack at things, not rpgs.
(Except for EVE Online, where you can whack evil pirates or slavers and
roleplay at the same time!)
(I think one of the reasons why the women on this list are quiet is that
there are sterotyping men around. I wouldn't hang around in let's say
knitting circles if the women were to patronize and stereotype me, thank
you very much, so I can imagine that some of the comments here would
make some women silent.)
