In John Varley's stories, it's just about that easy.  He even menions that
some parents have their childrens genitals removed so they grow up
completely neuter and can choose when they reach adulthood.  Also prevents
unwanted pregnancy.  Of course one of his main characters has implants
allowing him/her to adjust *bone structure* to better play acting roles (or
escape identification).  I wish he'd write more.  :P
